Standard host stand height is 42 inches — the same as a bar top or standard reception counter. This puts the work surface at a comfortable height for a standing host and positions the reservation book or tablet at a readable angle for guests approaching on foot. Some operators prefer 40 inches for a slightly lower, more approachable feel.
What is the ADA height requirement for a host stand?
Under ADA Standards for Accessible Design (Section 4.32 and the 2010 ADA Standards Section 902), a service counter must have at least one accessible section no higher than 34 inches above the floor, with a clear floor space of at least 30 × 48 inches in front of it. If your host stand is the only point of guest interaction at the entry, an accessible lowered section is required. High-volume entries with two hosts working simultaneously need a wider stand (42–60 inches) and a clear staff zone of at least 48 inches behind the stand to the nearest obstacle. ADA accessible routes must maintain 36-inch minimum clear width throughout the entry path.
What is hostess station depth?
Standard hostess station depth is 16–20 inches. A 16-inch depth is sufficient for a tablet mount and a reservation binder. A 20-inch depth adds room for a cash drawer or printer. Deeper builds (22–24 inches) are used when the stand includes a full pedestal base with storage drawers, which requires more internal carcass depth for the drawer slides.
What is the ADA counter height for an accessible host stand section?
The accessible section must be no more than 34 inches high. This is lower than a standard 42-inch stand, so accessible sections are typically built as a separate lower unit integrated into the stand design, or as a recessed knee section in a wider desk-style build. The accessible section needs a 30 × 48-inch clear floor approach space and, if the host needs to work at that section, a knee clearance of 27 inches high × 30 inches wide × 19 inches deep.
